Be Balanced in Belize –
An Ayurvedic Retreat for Rest and Rejuvenation
An Ayurvedic Retreat for Rest and Rejuvenation
The cardinal aim of Ayurveda is to restore the individual balance between mind, body and spirit. Ayurveda blends our modern lifestyle and health-oriented habits with the ancient wisdom of using natural substances, medicines and herbs to help us lead a healthy, happy, stress-free and disease-free life.
As a practitioner, too often we spend a significant amount of time exploring and learning about Ayurveda and focusing on ways to extend the knowledge to others, while neglecting our own physiological needs.
The reality for most of us is that, even with our knowledge of all the beautiful, rich, and effective modalities Ayurveda has to offer, we sometimes fail to stop what we’re doing and work on our own body, mind, and spirit. That’s because being a healer requires a different kind of self-care. We often need to go deeper … going deeper to allow time for a complete break that rejuvenates our bodies, so we become stronger and more at ease when working. Could this be you?
Do you feel the need to take break from your day-to-day routine?
Are you seeking a safe place to relax, unwind and look inward while you take a break from studying or healing others?
Do you appreciate seeing beautiful sights, and tasting organic healing foods in a place that honors, respects and supports your Ayurvedic approach to life?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then this retreat is for you.
For 7 days , bring your knowledge of Ayurveda, experience authentic Belizean cuisine and culture, connect with nature, and join your peers in a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Rest, relax and take care of yourself while you expand your ability to grow your practice, share your Ayurveda knowledge, and gain confidence in your practice of the science of life.
This retreat is designed for those who already have foundational knowledge of Ayurveda.

Special Tours and Cultural Experiences
Tour the Belize Spice Farm and Botanical Gardens - When Tom and Tessy Mathew (of Bluefield WV) vacationed in Belize in 1989, they found it to be remarkably similar to their childhood home of Kerala in India. The Malabar Coast of Kerala was the original destination of Christopher Columbus. Many explorers were searching for an easy route to India in order to trade for its lucrative spices. Columbus set off on his voyage which he thought would be a shortcut when he accidentally discovered the new world, and the rest is history. Some of the spices Kerala is known for include its world-famous Tellicherry black Pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Kerala is also home to one of the oldest teak plantations.
Belize, the gem of Central America on the Caribbean Coast, has weather that mirrors that of Kerala India where the Mathews were born and raised. Starting a Spice farm in Belize seemed so enticing, Mathews decided to jump in and give it a try. Many years ago, Nutmeg was introduced to Grenada and Cardamom to Guatemala with great success. So, the idea to do something similar was very tempting. With the help from GOB Mathews imported Black pepper, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Clove and vanilla to Belize. Most of these plants adopted their new home and thrived. Over the years the Spice farm also became a Botanical Gardens by adding a fruit Orchard with exotic fruit trees and an aquatic garden with Lotuses, and water lilies from Thailand and Gigantic Victoria amazonica native to Brazil. Belize Spice Farm and Botanical Garden (BS&BG) was born and grew up to be a favorite tourist attraction for Belizeans and thousands of visitors every year.
Visit Mayan Shaman, Ms. Aurora Garcia Saqui and Mr. Enesto - We’ll take a short bus ride to the quaint Mayan village at the entrance to the famous Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve to visit Ms. Aurora’s Herbal Clinic. Ms. Aurora is an artist, herbalist and traditional healer -- a direct descendant of the world renowned Mayan Healer, Don Elijio Panti. Don Elijio bequeathed to Aurora much of his knowledge while she served as his apprentice for many years.
Begin your traditional medicine journey, with a guided walk along a canopied jungle path used by the Maya to gather their medicinal plants and herbs. Along this tropical rainforest path, you will encounter many of the same plants Aurora uses in the traditional herbal remedies that she utilizes in her healing clinic.
You will have a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the making of a Mayan herbal remedy by Aurora, she will explain the herb and its medicinal properties as she prepares and grinds it with a hand mill. You will also see an experience "smudge house", with various bark and leaves used in curing many different illnesses, traditional dance costume and much more.
Ernesto Saqui is an avid conservationist and former director of the Jaguar Reserve for 15 years. As an expert naturalist, Ernesto often leads guests on nature or birding walks. He has also been a Maya leader for 26 years in his community of Maya Centre. A former teacher, Ernesto continues to educate about Maya Cultural traditions and founded the non-profit organization, Juuntulico’on, which means One People in Maya. His vision for Juuntilico’on has been to sustain cultural knowledge and traditions for future generations. Ernesto conducts Maya Ceremonies for different occasions, including Maya weddings, and spiritual cleansing for those seeking renewal in their life.
Ernesto and Aurora, both of Maya descent, have created a mosaic of fascinating learning experiences for their visitors. This includes traditional cultural activities such as Maya herbal medicine, spiritual cleansing and learning how to cook Maya dishes. Authentic colorful handmade Mayan craft items will be available for sale. This unique tour affords you a glimpse into the secret life of the Mayan. You will return home with a greater appreciation for where many medicinal cures originated.
Catamaran Caye Tour with Blue Water Sailing - Experience a part of the world that many people never see. This once-in-a-lifetime sailing excursion will allow you to experience the majesty of one of Belize’s offshore private cayes (islands). Captain Hank Rhamdas and crew are native Belizeans and will guide you across nearly 10 miles of the Caribbean Sea toward the barrier reef and share their rich family history of sailing, fishing, and island hoping. You’ll enjoy all-day beverages, snacks, and a full authentic Belizean buffet lunch at the caye. The tour includes snorkeling as well as an opportunity for sunbathing and yoga on the caye if you like.
